Knights of Frontier Valley

Mac version now available!

Venerable Knights,

I'm happy to announce that Knights of Frontier Valley now runs on Mac. Making this work has been a hobby project for quite some time, years actually, and it's finally done.

If you're interested in technical details: I'm developing the game in the Java programming language, using OpenGL as a rendering framework (basically the technology the original Minecraft was made with). Both runs by default on Mac (even though OpenGL is marked as deprecated there), so in general it should have "just worked" all along.

But it never is as easy as advertised - there were a multitude of issues, including the incompatibility of some 3rd party libraries such as the one for playing back cutscenes, problems with shader files, and about 10 other things that needed a workaround. I finally worked through all of them and it works well, at least on Intel hardware. Apple Silicon is next to be tested via Rosetta... if there are issues, I'll release a native Apple build.

The Mac user base on Steam is below 2%, so I don't expect a noticeable uptick in players or wishlists, but as a former Apple employee making this work was a bit of a question of honor :)

The Mac version is already out for the Playtest, so if you're a Mac user, you still have a few days to download the game and enjoy it.

Still on the menu: a Linux version, possibly also Steam Deck.

Until next time,

Martin
