Description
A retro shooter inspired by the older Wolfenstein and Doom games. A tribute of sorts, if you like, where I aspire emulate the games I love the most and that requires a certain amount of skill to complete, while adding a few personal and more current-day touches.
Embark on a bullet-dodging, chaos-filled mission deep behind enemy lines in Darkenstein 3-D.
Inspired by the brutal rhythm of Return to Castle Wolfenstein and the glory of 90s shooters, this retro FPS blends old-school secrets, explosive physics, and a story driven by desperation — and a dog.
The Hobo Guy
Embody the fury of the Hobo Guy — a furious American drifter lost in enemy territory, armed with nothing but a shotgun and vengeance. In 1940s Germany, he's outnumbered and outgunned, but he’s not backing down. This isn’t even about justice — it’s personal.
Rescue your Dog
Gunther, your loyal dog, is taken during a Nazi raid. Now he's locked deep inside enemy strongholds, and you'll have to fight your way through bunkers, castles, valleys, and more to get him back. Along the way, you'll uncover fortresses, alien secrets, and strange powers all caught in a crumbling war.
Old-School Gunplay
Darkenstein 3-D plays fast — but not brainless. Enemy projectiles can be dodged, and survival means mastering positioning, movement, and aim. Every fight is a deadly dance of strafes, corners, and timing. No cover mechanics, no aim assist — just raw gunplay.
Progressive levels
Each of the 13 handcrafted levels ramps up the pressure. You'll explore castles, caves, valleys and desert towns, unlocking doors with hidden keys, discovering secrets, collecting treasure, and maximizing your score.
Dynamic companion
You won’t fight alone. Your rat companion joins the bloodbath, lunging at enemies and sowing chaos in tight firefights. Combine him with grenades and mines for maximum carnage — he’s small, angry, and very hungry.
Bloody visuals
We got gibs. We got physics. Enemies go flying, ragdoll over railings, and explode into glorious red mist. Props scatter and shatter during firefights, turning rooms into debris-filled warzones. Every shot feels like it counts — and every kill looks like it hurts.
MTX Free
No microtransactions. No battle passes. No currency systems. Just one complete, free retro FPS — the way it used to be.
Developed solo
Created over four years by a solo developer, Darkenstein 3-D delivers many hours of punchy, replayable carnage. What started as a rough prototype evolved into a full campaign — hard, funny, handcrafted, and ready for war
